The Peugeot 107 is a small hatchback that’s most at home in the city. First introduced in 2005, and replaced with the 108 in 2014, the 107 is one of the best used car bargains on the market. It’s cheeky styling will win the hearts of a lot of buyers, whilst its low running costs, cheap purchase price, and low insurance groups make it a great first car, or an ideal city runaround. It’s not the most spacious, and interior quality isn’t the best, but for no-frills motoring about town, the 107 could be the ideal car for you.

Funky design, but not the most spacious
The interior of the 107 reflects the attractive exterior aesthetics, with a modern, clean design. There’s not a lot of room for passengers or luggage, but you’ll get everything you need from a city car in terms of equipment.
The 107 might have been introduced over ten years ago, but the dashboard design still feels quite fresh. Controls are well-placed and simple to use, so if you’re not accustomed to modern technology, or if you’ve never owned your own car before, it’s ideal. Material quality isn’t the finest, but it feels robust and well put together. The exposed metal in the rear of the cabin does however feel a little bit on the cheap side, though metal is hard to break, so you won’t have to deal with broken interior trim if you’ve got kids in the back.
City cars aren’t known for their tremendous practicality, and the 107 is no different. There is however enough room for average sized adults to sit comfortably in the back, which is a plus in this market. The 139 litre boot capacity is pretty disappointing, even for a city car, though there’s still enough room for a bit of shopping, or a couple of carry-on cabin bags. It’s not as practical as something like a Volkswagen Up!, or a Hyundai i10, but it’s reasonable enough.
Equipment levels in the 107 are pretty standard for the class. If you’re only driving in town, you won’t especially need things like cruise control or parking sensors, so it’s obvious why these don’t feature. The entry-level Access trim comes with a CD player, and body-coloured bumpers, but not a lot else. The Active trim is the ideal compromise, as it adds in air-con and front electric windows, which are essential for most buyers.
All in all the interior of the 107 is everything you’d expect a city car to be. The quirky styling is a plus-point, whilst there’s enough room for adults in the back. It doesn’t have the biggest load capacity, or have the longest equipment list, but the 107 is simple, solid, and built to last.

Great to drive around town
The Peugeot 107 is a fun car to drive in the city, just don’t expect it to be a great car to drive out of town. The steering is nice and light, which makes it ideal for nipping in and out of busy city centre traffic, whilst also making parking a doddle. There’s also a fair bit of grip, so it copes well through the corners, and body roll is kept in check. At speed the 107 isn’t quite as impressive, as it never really settles, making long-distance driving something that should only be attempted occasionally.
Suspension and Chassis
At low speeds the Peugeot 107 is a comfortable car to travel in, so speed bumps and small potholes shouldn’t cause too many thumps in the cabin. At speed however, the 107 does begin to struggle. The stiff suspension make for a bumpy ride, especially on poor-quality B-roads, whilst road, wind, and engine noise become intrusive on long motorway journeys.
Gearbox options in the 107 come in two guises. The standard throughout the range is a five-speed manual transmission that’s perfect for town driving. The short, snappy gearchange, and the light clutch make for an entertaining drive. An automatic option is also available for those who don’t like changing gear, though it’s not really suited to the 107’s nippy character.
Only one petrol engine in the range
When it comes to deciding how you want to power your 107, you’ve only got one option. That isn’t a problem however, as the 1.0 litre petrol engine is perfect for town driving. Peugeot has kept things simple with the 107, and you won’t have to compare facts and figures to get the best deal.
City cars aren’t really designed to be powerful, and the 107 is no different. The three-cylinder petrol engine in the 107 is peppy enough about town, though it’s not powerful enough for regular out-of-town driving. With 68bhp on tap, the 107 will accelerate from 0-62mph in just 11.1 seconds. That’s not bad for a car in this class, and has plenty of power for most buyers, though it does struggle to get up to and retain motorway speed.
Eco-friendly buyers will be absolutely delighted with the Peugeot 107. Despite the fact that the 107 hasn’t been on sale from new for quite a few years, it still incredibly manages sub 100g/km CO2 emissions. A figure of 99/gkm is still impressive today, and with a 107 you won’t be paying any road tax. Money-savers will also be delighted with the 107, as it can achieve an amazing 65.7mpg. The 107 is a car that’s incredibly cheap to run day-to-day.
There might only be one engine option in the 107 range, but that’s absolutely fine. When you’re looking for a used 107 you won’t have to consider how much it’ll cost you to run, because all models are exceptionally light on the wallet.
Not as impressive as more modern rivals
Cars in the same class as the Peugeot 107 don’t usually achieve the highest possible 5-star NCAP safety rating. Only the VW Up!/Seat Mii/Skoda Citigo triumvirate have achieved this feat so far, but most modern city cars do manage to achieve 4-star ratings. Unfortunately, the 107 only managed 3-stars, with scores of 68% in adult protection, 73% in child protection, and 53% in pedestrian protection. It’s not a long way off however, so you shouldn’t be too concerned. The 107 does come as standard with much safety kit, with technology such as electronic skid control only available as an optional extra.

The 107 is only available with one engine, and sub 100g/km CO2 emissions feature on every model, making the 107 road tax exempt, unless an automatic gearbox is in place (104g/km). Fuel efficiency is similarly impressive, with 65.6mpg on offer in the manual, and 62.7mpg in the automatic, so fuel costs will be low, no matter which spec you choose.
No matter which model go for in the 107, you’ll be getting group 3 insurance. That means you can have a top of the range, high-class 107, and not pay any more than you would for a more basic model. Whatever spec, insurance costs will be impressively low, making the 107 an ideal car for first time drivers, or as a city runaround.
Depreciation was a factor with the Peugeot 107, but only when you bought from new. With first year depreciation as high as 40%, you’re better off opting for an inspected used equivalent.
