Maligned for many years, Skoda over the past decade or so has forged a reputation as being at the forefront of quality car manufacturing. Part of the Volkswagen empire, Skoda is most definitely top dog of the subsidiaries. With multiple award winners under its belt, and customer satisfaction that most brands could only dream of, Skoda is a brand that is a name that is associated more often than not with the phrase ‘best in class’. Offering the usual range of cars you’d expect from a big manufacturer- small hatchbacks, saloons etc. there’s also a quite unique crossover vehicle. Long gone are the days of dull rust buckets, Skoda is now a firmly established premium player offering exceptional value for money.
The most recognisable model in Skoda’s range is the Fabia. A multiple award winner, including the prestigious What Car car of the year in 2015, and best in class in 2016, the Fabia is undoubtedly the best supermini on the market right now. With an exceptional interior, taught handling and chassis, and a good quality efficient engine range, the Fabia excels in every area. Couple this with the fact that it’s cheaper than some of its closest rivals, and you’ve got a package that takes some beating.
This is a common theme throughout the range. The superb Octavia, winner of the What Car best family car 2016 award, provides a serious challenge to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus in this sector. Cheaper, arguably better looking, and with standard equipment levels better than both, the Octavia, like the Fabia, is the best in its class. Add in a hugely practical estate option, a four-wheel drive version, and a powerful Golf GTI rivalling VRS model, and you’ve essentially got everything you’d ever need from a large family size car.
There’s also the TopGear recommended saloon, the Skoda Superb. A giant luxury saloon in the same size range as an Audi A6, but with a cost level less than an Audi A4. Add in the fact that the Superb is arguably every bit as good as an A6, if not better, and what you’ve got is one serious piece of kit, for a bargain price.
For those who want a cheap city car, the Skoda Citigo is another fantastic option. Like its bigger brothers, the Citigo offers great quality at low prices. Essentially the same as the Volkswagen Up!, but at a lower cost, the Citigo is a fantastic first car or city runaround.
Then there’s the remarkable MPV, the Yeti. Again a TopGear editor’s choice, this is a high-quality car packed with character. The looks might not be to everyone’s taste, but the quality on show here is something everyone’s going to enjoy. It’s spacious, comes with good standard kit, has a good range of engines, and is family friendly. If you’re looking for a family car, there’s not many in the same league as the Yeti. There’s also a 4x4 option for the adventurous. All in all, as with the entire Skoda range, the Yeti is incredibly difficult to better.
